Moving to Malaga

One of the nation’s leading cities and the fifth most expensive, Malaga is a sought after destination due to its enviable location and open culture. Here’s a few other bits you need to know about it…

Is Malaga really that expensive?

While it may be expensive relative to the rest of Spain, Malaga is cheap compared to countries like the UK and the Netherlands. Rental rates are less than half they are in Amsterdam, with a family of 4 able to live comfortably on just £2,200 a month. Yes, monthly wages are lower than in both these countries, but the tax rates are lower and the cost of utilities highly stable. This all adds up to an option that’s well worth considering when you want to make sure you get value and sustainable living without a drastic drop in your standard of living.

Do you need a car in Malaga?

Although the city is densely packed at its core, unless you’re working right in the very heart of the city you will likely want a car to get to and from work. The charm of Malaga lies in the fact that it’s a cross between a small city and large town, which also means it has a couple of downsides. The density isn’t quite there to have the expansive public train networks you’ll find are commonplace in the likes of Madrid and Barcelona. If you’re working out in the surrounding area, you’ll find you have a lot more flexibility with your own vehicle. Parking is also a lot easier to come by than in larger cities with most properties coming with their own dedicated spaces, provided you’re not looking to rent or buy in the heart of the city centre.

How safe is Malaga?

Policing in Malaga has seen heavy investment in recent years and the public transport networks are well looked after and virtually always punctual. This allows you to navigate the city at all hours of the day with the peace of mind that makes all the difference. You can also rely on the locals to help you with your directions and Spanish if you get lost on your early days there. Because of its size and personable culture, you’ll find that you can make your way around without running into difficulty or antisocial behaviour.

How do you know if Malaga is right for you?

The key is to check out all the basics so you know what you’re signing yourself up for before you pack up your stuff and make your way to your new home. Spend time looking at the employment market, schooling, opportunities for young people, and so on. You’ll also want to look a little more into retirement options for expats so you can plan for the long term if you plan on never going back to the UK.
