Moving to Lisbon

The capital is popular with families and working professionals who want a mix of authentic culture and contemporary city living. With this in mind, let’s dive right into the details…

How much does raising a family cost in Lisbon?

A family of 4 can expect to spend in the region of £1,500 a month excluding rent. This includes eating out several times a month which will cost on average 20% less than in the UK, but doesn’t include anything like private healthcare or schooling. While the wages in Portugal are lower than in the UK, the relative spending on social institutions like healthcare, social care and policing are closely aligned. This means you can expect the same level of access to services when you need them as back home, plus you also have the option of paying a little more each month to go private.

Should you buy or rent in Lisbon?

This is the age-old question that’s always a tough one to answer. If you want to make sure you get value for money from the start, buying a property in a district that’s popular with young families is always the way to go. These types of buyers will always have half an eye on moving in and out of the area as their families and earning power increase, which gives you something of a captive audience if you wish to sell your property and move up the ladder too. Find somewhere with ready access to the city centre for professionals and local schooling for young parents and you’ll have a home that’s also a sound investment.

Can you live in Lisbon if your Portuguese is bad?

You can and no one will judge you for it, but the more you put into learning your new language the more you’ll get out of the city. Visiting restaurants, cafes, and seeing Sporting Club play will give a load of informal opportunities to try out new phrases and master the accent. Make the most of them and you’ll soon find you have a thriving work, social and family life in your new home all at the same time.

How expensive is transport in Lisbon?

Lisbon is a densely packed but relatively small city compared to other capitals in Europe. This means that to navigate the city itself you will want to think about public transport where monthly passes for trains and buses can work out as little as a few Euros a day depending on where you’re going and how long the journey takes. Many families living away from the centre of the city look for properties with dedicated parking so they can head to the coast or the countryside on the weekends, so that’s also something worth considering.

Any final tips for life in Lisbon?

The city does have a nightlife if that’s a big tick for you, but it also has a culture where dinner is eaten late into the evening. If you want to bond with your new work colleagues and neighbours, a little flexibility in terms of your home routine will work wonders in your first few weeks and months in the city.
