Moving to the Netherlands

The Netherlands is a highly sought after corner of Europe for expats looking to settle into a vibrant and liberal way of life. To help you make the right decision, take a look at a few of the key questions we’re often asked…

Cost of life in the Netherlands

The average monthly salary for a Dutch worker is £2,500 with many earning considerably more due to the high concentration of post-graduate degree holders. While many employers pay the social security contributions to the government directly, this effectively reduces the apparent value of salaries. Make sure you take this into account when relocating because you might feel like real wages are lower in the Netherlands, but they’re not when you factor in everything you get back from the higher rates of taxation.

Is the Netherlands safe?

Absolutely, the Netherlands has a reputation for being an open, liberal country all over the world and this is reflected in the decreasing crime rate. High tax means high investment in public services, many of which have a direct impact on things such as cleanliness, public transport and policing. All of these combine to create a safe country in which people are always ready and willing to help and assist one another.

Can you speak English in the Netherlands?

English is something of a second language in the Netherlands with many of the locals breaking seamlessly in and out of Dutch and English. That said, if you want to get the most out of your home’s new culture, and the fantastic rural areas where English is less common, you need to invest some time in learning Dutch. The two languages are linguistically very similar and the pronunciation and accent relatively easy to master compared with other languages on the continent.

Job options in the Netherlands

Education, engineering and healthcare have all seen heavy levels of investment in the last 10 years which has resulted in something of a boom across the country. If you have a degree or postgraduate degree, combined with several years of professional experience, you’ll soon find yourself highly in demand from a range of prospective employers.

Documents required in Netherlands

If you are not a Dutch national then you will need to apply for a residency and work visa — something which is somewhat of a formality if you have desirable skills and are coming from the UK or EU. Your tax and social security will be automatically taken care of by your employer, making sure you have no gaps in your ability to access and receive any and all necessary healthcare once you arrive in your new country.
